Respite Care

What is Respite Care? 

Sometimes carers need to be cared for too. Respite care gives family members and those who provide care for others the opportunity to take a break when needed BlueCross can provide respite care in one of our 24 residences across Melbourne or in your own home.


Bookings for respite can be made in advance for planned respite, and wherever possible we can accommodate emergency respite.


Respite can also be accessed through privately-funded services.


Respite at Home

We understand many people prefer to remain in the comfort and familiarity of home. Respite at home can be provided, on a short or long term basis, in a client's own home.

Our highly qualified, skilled and experienced personal carers all hold a minimum Certificate III in Aged and/or Community Care. They also hold a Level 2 First Aid Certificate and have been carefully screened, including the successful outcome of the police check process. They will provide you with safe, sensitive, private and dignified care. During respite, personal care needs such as showering, meals assistance and dressing assistance can be attended to.

Respite at Home Eligibility

This program can be funded privately, or through packaged funding such as Home Care Packages or Veteran Home Care. An Aged Care Assessment Record is not required to access this service privately.


Day Respite Centre

BlueCross has two day respite centres: Livingstone Centre at BlueCross Livingstone Gardens in Vermont South and at BlueCross Ivanhoe.

A dedicated program within the residence, day respite has access to all the amenities that the residence offers, including the cafe and residential group activities.

The services available to clients include art activities, exercise and physical therapy and cognitive exercises. Clients will also have access to a range of leisure and lifestyle activities including movie screenings, men's shed and armchair travel.

Day Respite Operating Hours

  • BlueCross Livingstone Gardens (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 9.30am to 3.00pm
  • BlueCross Ivanhoe (Tuesday) from 9.30am to 3.00pm

Day Respite Centre Eligibility

  • Anyone over the age of 65 is eligible, all attendees will be assessed for suitability for the Day Respite Centre in consultation with the Day Respite Coordinator
  • Commonwealth Home Support Program - Social Support Group is also available at BlueCross Livingstone Gardens. Contact the Day Respite Coordinator to discuss eligibility.

Residential Respite

Sometimes carers need respite for longer periods; for extended holidays, surgery and recuperation or simply to rest and recover.

BlueCross residential services offer high quality respite care for your loved one within one of our 24 aged care residences across Melbourne. We provide flexible, short-term or extended care for upwards of two weeks, several times a year.

Respite guests have their own room and ensuite. Guests dine with the residents and become part of the residence family; there is a choice of leisure and lifestyle activities to participate in.

Residential respite care is subsided by the government for people with an aged care assessment, which gives the person you care for access to 63 days of respite per financial year. There is a basic daily care fee to cover the cost of the care, which varies for each residence but is no more than 85% of the single basic Age Pension.


Residential Respite Eligibility

The person seeking residential respite must have an Aged Care Assessment Record stating they are eligible for respite.
