Person-centred care

BlueCross values every client, their family and friends, staff and all other partners in their care.

Tom Kitwood states that personhood or person-centred care is:

“…a standing or status that is bestowed upon every human-being, by others, in the context of a relationship and social-being.  It implies recognition, respect, and trust.”

Person-first is a set of principles that honour the person before the task. These practices provide the basis for:

  • creating a daily life worth living
  • striving to nurture the mind as well as the spirit
  • promoting growth and development for all

BlueCross works with stakeholders and partners on a range of initiatives to support social, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual wellness.

We recognise the individual capability of each of our clients and encourage them to participate in decision making.

We endeavour to deliver a service that enables people receiving care to feel in control rather than controlled.

BlueCross residences are welcoming, safe, and secure and offer access to both indoor and outdoor activities, and provide a range of public and private spaces for resident’s, families and friends to enjoy. Our home care services is committed to promoting the dignity and independence of clients and to facilitate the highest possible quality of life with the best health outcomes for each individual.

BlueCross is committed to the VIP approach to Person Centred Care Brooker (2003) as follows

V = valuing people  - every person has value regardless of age or cognitive status

I = individualised care   - using an individualised approach that recognises and promotes the uniqueness of the individual

P = personal perspectives  - acknowledge and understand life from the perspective of the person with dementia

S = social environment - providing a social environment designed to meet the psychological needs of the individual

Person-centred care is about a special and unique story, each client’s journey, past and present and the part you now play. It is about respecting and supporting choices whilst keeping the person comfortable and safe. It is about working with the client and their family, listening, learning and sharing about what is really important to them and ‘what will make their day’.
