The BlueCross STARFish EXTRAVAGANZA

Celebrating United Nations International Day of the Older Persons - October 2011

Getting the most out of life!

No matter what age you are……..

During October we celebrate the United Nations International Day of Older Persons which coincides with the Senior’s Festival in Victoria.

This is a time when we can recognise the contributions that older Australians have made to their families and their communities.  We can thank them for how they have helped shape modern Australia and continue to make significant contributions to society with a lifetime of skills, knowledge and experience.

The principles of the International Day of Older Persons are founded on the need to build a more inclusive society with an emphasis on participation, self fulfilment, independence and dignity for all, and a willingness to transform these principles into actions.

On October 7 this year BlueCross has taken these ideas and put them into practice!  The annual Extravaganza  is a wonderful demonstration of making the most out of life, no matter what age you are!   Thinking about the capabilities of older people and getting as many as possible feeling good about being active so they can live happier, healthier lives.

Every BlueCross client is invited to attend the event held at Melbourne Park Function Centre.  Each residence is provided with a theme and then creates their costumes and dancing (or wheelchair!) routines. There is loads of laughter, tonnes of singing, and a great time is had by all.

Everyone is encouraged to come and at this year’s event there were nearly 600 people in attendance.  There has been “Dancing with the Stars” and “Celebration of Nations” and this year is a return to swing with the big bands presenting “As time goes by”.

Carol Allen is the CEO of BlueCross and says “We invite our clients to include their families and friends, and BlueCross staff, volunteers, and their families also come along.  It is a fantastic community event with special guests, entertainment and people from all the different residences and home care clients getting involved.

“It is well documented how important it is to keep older people active and moving.  The Extravaganza also promotes social interaction with the wider community involvement as well as between the residents.  It is a heart warming event to be a part of.”

BlueCross aims to create an environment where we can enrich lives, foster independence and provide support and care as people age.  BlueCross wants to celebrate life and inclusion and focus on what the older person can do. This is not the time to sit around and be a spectator, there is still plenty of time to join in and participate, to sing and laugh and dance, in your own time and style!

This event is only made possible with the support of our generous sponsors.  We wish to acknowledge the  generosity of our GOLD sponsors for their partnership in this important event.
